The week of the 26th January 2026 to the 30th January 2026 is Family Mediation Week.

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has, in recent years, proven to be very successful in allowing parties to reach an agreement following disputes within Family Law. Included within these forms of ADR is mediation.

Mediation can prove to be a cost effective way of reaching agreement with your ex partner in respect of Family disputes. Mediation can be much less scary than court proceedings, it allows parties to move at their own pace and can be undertaken via a multiple number of platforms, including ‘face to face mediation’ and via MS Teams. This allows the participants to feel as comfortable as possible when negotiating during a time which is incredibly stressful.

It is often a requirement in family matters that an attempt at some form of ADR is made, or an exemption from ADR is set out, prior to a party making an application to the court for contested proceedings.

Many mediators are trained and experienced in dealing with all forms of Family disputes including finances, property and children. Mediation can be a very effective method in reaching an agreement.

Family Mediation Week aims to inform people about the benefits of family mediation and encourage separating couples to think about family mediation as a way of helping them to take control and make decisions together.

Over the course of Family Mediation Week, the Family Mediation Council will be hosting a series of free webinars, in person seminars publishing information and explaining the benefits of mediation.
